Iran Informative Speech Outline Essay

Iran Informative Speech Outline Essay Purpose: to provide a brief description of Iran’s political, social, economic, and religious spheres and explain its role in the contemporary geopolitics. The main idea of this informative speech outline is that as a powerful player on the Middle Eastern geopolitical map, Iran has a significant effect on the global policies; yet, its inconsistency and economic challenges somewhat limit its influence as a regional leader. Introduction. A. Attracting attention. Many of you have probably heard about Iran in news or read about it in newspapers and books. This country is well-known for its anti-Western rhetoric, which has been the main cause of its continuous tension with the USA and Europe. However, how much do you actually know about this country? Does it play an important role in the regional and international politics? These issues are explored in detail in my informative speech. B. Iran is the largest and one of the most powerful countries in the Middle East. It is the Islamic theocracy governed by the president, government, and local councils. Its official religion is Shi’a Islam, which is also the basis of its social structure, legislation, and culture. This country is the second largest economy in Africa and the Middle East. Its rich oil reserves make it an influential player on the global energy market (Amuzegar, 2014). Although its economic and political relations with the West are strong, it tends to favor its Eastern partners the most, which often contributes to tensions in the Middle East as a strategic energy-producing region (Ehteshami, 2009). With the introduction of a nuclear deal, Iran is expected to strengthen its position in the region, but it is still not clear whether it will be able to shape Middle Eastern policies to a great extent (Wall Street Journal, 2016). Main Body A. Iran is a large Middle Eastern country whose territory equals the combined territories of Germany, Spain, France, Beligium, the Netherlands, Belgium, and Portugal (Stratfor, 2011). It borders with Armenia, Turkmenistan, Azerbaijan, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Turkey, and Iraq. The largest population groups include Persian, Azeri, and Kurd, and Islam is the official religion practiced by the majority of citizens. The overwhelming majority of Iranians are Sunni, while Shia Islam is practiced by only 10% of the population (Lutterloh et al., 2015). B. Iran’s mountainous geography is believed to contribute to its economic challenges because the majority of the country’s population live in distant areas with limited economic opportunities (Stratfor, 2011). International sanctions imposed by the Western countries as a response to the nuclear program contributed to the unfavourable economic situation in the country, which is still heavily dependent on oil production. Hostile relationships with the western countries, especially the USA, as well as inconsistent and contradictory foreign policies have contributed to the isolation from the international politics. However, with the introduction of a new nuclear deal, Iran can improve its geopolitical position. Iran possesses substantial natural resources and opportunities for economic growth, but this potential will not likely be used effectively unless Iran forms a comprehensive and collaborative regional and international policies. Conclusion. Iran is a large country possessing substantial natural resources and developmental potential. However, its economic development has been limited by the inconsistent policies, undisguised hostility towards western partners, and local challenges. The country can potentially become a powerful geopolitical leader, but only if it manages to strengthen its economy and introduce comprehensive foreign policy.

My Target Accomplishment At The Gray Zones Of...

Transitions are the moments in life when you dive into the in depth consciousness of your personal inner beings versus your physical intuitions to obtain a visual reward. Navigating through the gray zones of transitioning can challenge you by presenting. new obstacles which demand you to respond in new ways no matter the circumstances. It’s the closing of doors to past memories and the opening of new beginnings. While transitioning can be inhibited by the adoption of negative habits and routine in which we become comfortable†¦show more content†¦As an entrepreneur you must learn to modify, readjust, and conform to changes that at times come at the most least expected moments. The up climb of evolving into a world renowned business owner is comparative t o Maya Angelou transition of tones and attitude from her arrival prior to graduation to the ending of her graduation. Within my paper you will explore my journey from high school to a four-year university to Essex County College. Leaving high school, I envisioned college as my chance at not only to gain physical freedom but academic freedom. After be tied down to a constructed schedule for 12 years to have the chance to create my own schedule of when I go to class just put ease to my brain. At first I was going to enlist in the military, but then I decided to enroll in college to show my parents how independent I was. I felt just like Maya Angelou when she stated â€Å"White folks would attend the ceremony, two or three would speak of God and home, and the Sothern way of life, and Mrs. Parsons, the principal’s wife, would play the graduation march while the lower-grade graduates paraded down the aisle and took their seats below the platform.† (22) She sounded just as excited and anticipated as I did about my journey to college. As graduation began to approach I got more anxious to the point where I and started packing for move in even though it was still 3 months away. But on graduation day, that’s when reality started to set in on me. As once I sat

Real Estate Values in San Diego County Free Essays

In this paper, I’m going to talk about what cities and areas of San Diego have higher real estate prices and higher incomes and why. Although the average home value in San Diego county is higher than most of the rest of the country, there is still a large spread in average home values. The average income in San Diego county is in the top ten percent in the country. We will write a custom essay sample on Real Estate Values in San Diego County or any similar topic only for you Order Now Like home values, incomes vary greatly from place to place within the county, ranging from around $11,000 to around $110,000. According to a survey done in 2009, a region dubbed â€Å"North County Coastal† is the most wealthy region of San Diego. this area extends from Del Mar to Oceanside. This is consistent with the general trend of coastal property being more desirable and therefore wealthy people living in them. However, Imperial Beach, while having coastal property, has both a low average income and home value relative to the rest of the county. Rancho Santa Fe is the wealthiest census designated place in San Diego. It is not located on the coast. It is a part of the â€Å"North County Coastal† region. It is surrounded by other wealthy communities. The location alone is not enough to explain why Rancho Santa Fe is as an expensive of a place to live as it is. There are places like Chula Vista with comparable landscapes. The pattern of wealth distribution in San Diego County appears to be that wealthy communities are built around other wealthy communities. These places are found in a thin coastal strip in the northwest and west-central parts of the county. This pattern could be extended to explain why this strip is situated closer to Orange County than it is to the Mexican border. Patterns of home value do not completely follow natural-physical desirability but are influenced by them. The places is San Diego County with the lowest home values are found in the far east county, outside of the San Diego Urban Area. The Two cities in San Diego county with the lowest home value are Borrego Springs and Campo. The lower value of these homes can be explained by their rural location. The average home values in these cities are around $150,000 compared to over $1. 5 million in Rancho Santa Fe. The lowest income cities in the county include National City, El Cajon and Lemon grove. There is a strong parallel between high median incomes and high median home prices in San Diego county. That parallel does exist with low median incomes and median home values. The median home value in El Cajon is more than double the median home value in Borrego Springs even though the median income is higher in Borrego Springs. This can be explained by the general higher cost of living in urban areas. What I have found in this project is that there are many factors contributing to where different income groups and home values are located. I also found that there are interests that intend to mislead. One survey, published in 2009 by the county of San Diego, gave home values and net worths that the fine print said were from 2005. It seams that some try to make things look better than they are and that others try to avoid being profiled. These to factors were the biggest obstacles in researching for this project. â€Å"San Diego Metro Home Prices and Home Values in CA – Zillow Local Info. † Zillow – Real Estate, Homes for Sale, Home Prices Values. Women and Men and Public Space Hilda Rix Nicholas and Henri Matisse in Morocco Essay Example For Students

Women and Men and Public Space: Hilda Rix Nicholas and Henri Matisse in Morocco Essay Negotiating painting in the Soko in Tangier One of the most interesting aspects of Hilda Rixs painting in Tangier, and one upon which I will focus in this article, is how she negotiated painting in public spaces in Morocco. All painters were subject to some kind of adverse scrutiny in early-twentieth-century Morocco whether they were male or female. The injunction against the making of images which was adhered to by strict Muslims meant that any painting in public places had to be done discreetly and in a manner which showed grateful acknowledgement of the indulgence given by local people to the artist. If anyone showed discomfort Rix immediately ceased drawing or painting; she packed her materials and awaited a more opportune moment. We will write a custom essay on Women and Men and Public Space: Hilda Rix Nicholas and Henri Matisse in Morocco specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now Her concern about painting and drawing in public is conveyed in an account she presented to her mother that involved a discussion of the exceedingly wet weather that she had encountered. Both she and  Matisse  complain about the inclement weather. The rain that greeted them on their arrival in Tangier persisted, leading  Matisse  to lament in a letter to his friend Gertrude Stein from the Hotel Villa de France: Since Monday at three when we arrived, until today, Saturday, it has rained continuously shall we ever see the sun in Morocco? (3) Arriving a week later, Hilda and the Tanners seemed to have fared better, although, at various points, Hilda Rix worried over the time lost for painting on account of the rain. When her sister Elsie joined Hilda for her second trip to Tangier in 1914, she also complained to their mother: Do you know mother it is raining frightfully. Everyone says they never knew such a wet season. Isnt it maddening? (Elsie Rix, letter to Elizabeth Rix, 13 March 1914). Rainy weather led Hilda into unexpected situations, such as when, shortly after her arrival, she had to take refuge in a small cafe. In an undated letter she recounted to her family in London her cross-cultural exchange, revealing her fear of breaking the law and joking about being captured and taken into a harem: It came on to rain suddenly and sharply, and I slipped into a little shop where I have made friends with the proprietors, a little French woman, and asked might I shelter from the rain, But certainly Mile, with pleasure! In a moment, enter two Moors, large middle aged important looking. Spotted my drawing on the counter (where it was drying, having got wet). At once the larger Moor pounced upon it and nodded to meHe looked at writing on my wall then took carefully a letter from his pocket, tore the margin from it, slowly, carefully with the pen from counter made first an elaborate frame, with curves little ornamentationsthen laboriously wrote out a very full correct edition of the notice on my wall, and solemnly presented itto me. The solemn business of writing (which runs from right to left of the page)took at least twenty minutes. I took his kind work, tore a little piece off the blank end of the paper wrote Thank you very much, in English gave it to him. He got a man in the shop to translate to ask me to sign it with my name We both bowed and pocketed our souvenir. The interpreter told me that the big Moor was a notaire, that the notice on the wall was about a veterinary surgeon who could do all manner of wonderful cures for cows etc. I was scared after, for a moment lest the notaire wished my name to run me into prison for tormenting the people in the market by always haunting them with my sketch block and ammunition bagorI knew not whatbut he was so big and imposing, and did everything with such a flourish! However several days have passed I am not popped into a harem or stolensoall is well. Fear of making images aside, Rix was able to produce a large range of images that showed both men and women in public involved in the commercial life of Tangier. Her descriptions of costume and manners are careful, and she clearly had an interest in recording and conveying ethnographic detail: The sun is heavenly, the sky is soft blue white butterflies are dancing in the air I see a group of wonderful people basking in the sunshine at the foot of white Moorish Arch. One young Moor in dull cinnamon coloured burnouse, his hood pulled over his headAnother in quaint cream woollen shirt affair, short mauve Trousers, Tight into the knees above his bare golden legs. Around his shaven head is wound a Turban of brown twine embroidered with gaily coloured flowers. His big brown long lashed eyes are dancing with mischief tho filled with dreaminess. His nose is straight his lips well shapen. (Undated letter to Elisabeth and Elsie Rix, probably February 1912) The sounds of a flute made their way to her, as her eyes settled upon a group of older men smoking a shisha pipe (hookah): .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e , .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .postImageUrl , .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e , .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e:hover , .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e:visited , .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e:active { border:0!important; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e:active , .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u15d76390b4b6497ada73093c58648a6e:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Space Age Technology Essayoh what sweetest of silverly notes waft up to my ears. There is an older red bearded, blind Moor who is smoking the weirdest pipe its stem is long its bowl the size of a thimblecertainly it seems the pipe of peace for it passes from one to the other of the group each drawing one or two lazy puffs there from. Hotel Villa de France was their place of residence on this and subsequent expeditions to Tangier:  Matisse  in October of 1912 and Hilda when she travelled with Elsie in February of 1914. Hildas second letter from the Hotel Villa de France in 1912 recounts the beginning of her work schedule and her delight at her progress with sketching: Worked very hard in the (market place) all day todayDid two sketches this morning and one this afternoon(could exhibit all). Am getting swing of things now. People are splendidit is just as easy to work as in Etaples market. Only so exciting because of the thousand things to do. Have done only one thing yet. Want to feel absolutely at home first. Oh I love this placeit is magnificent for workand too the hotel is very nice. View from roof magnificent!!! Yesterday went donkey ride (all the party) out into the country. Came back with arms laden with blue irises and white feathery flower. My wont I have a crowd of sketches to show you. Matisse  was also fascinated by the flora of Tangier, painting irises in his hotel room, but he steered clear of the marketplace. Perhaps he found the attention of the stall holders and the marketgoers intrusive. It is also possible that Hilda Rix, as a woman, was less a subject of scrutiny than any male artist, especially if he had begun to paint images of women. That might well have attracted more negative reaction than any image that Hilda painted.  Matisse  had never painted the bustling urban life and seldom ventured into common areas to paint en plein air, preferring interiors, portraits, nudes and figure studies, and landscapes. In Tangier, the privacy of the Hotel Villa de France, and later the Villa Brooks, suited him. Throughout his career he studied flowers and plants, painting floral studies and still lifes to a degree that was unusual for a male artist of his stature. His innovative use of the floral motif was indeed central to his genius, and in the latter part of his career it dominated his practice. Tangier presented him with the opportunity to indulge his passion. Restricted by the weather, he painted many still-life compositions in his hotel room, from the flowers available in the market and in the gardens around the hotel. Le vase diris (1912) is one of the first he completed in Tangier.  Matisse  located his irises, then plentiful in the market, in a vase on the dressing table of his room. After several weeks of working in this cramped space, he was presented with an opportunity to paint outdoors in one of the largest gardens that Tangier had to offer. Walter Harris, Moroccan correspondent of the London Times and a local identity, introduced him to the British national Jack Brooks whose home, the Villa Brooks, dominated the landscape in the hills behind Hotel Villa de France.  Matisse  repeatedly returned there to sketch and paint, accompanied by Amelie, even renting an outhouse at the villa to store his pictures (Spurling 104).  Matisse  was fascinated by the acanthus which grew abundantly on the estate, noting: The ground was covered with acanthus. I had never seen acanthus. I knew acanthus only from the drawings of Corinthian capitals that I had made at the Ecole de Beaux- Arts. I found the acanthus magnificent. Much more interesting, greener than those at my school. My spirit was exalted by these great trees, very tall, and below the rich acanthus provided a no less important focus through their sumptuousness. The simplicity of the composition gives the painting a charming, almost Rousseauesque quality, with its absence of conventional perspective. He presents the landscape in the classic Tangerian colour scheme of blue and green. Henri  Matisse, Hilda Rix and  Henry  Ossawa Tanner all painted the famous gateway entrance to Tangier, the Bab el-Aassa. The arch cuts through the southern wall surrounding the kasbah, and all three artists executed works of the site in compositions with shared features. Rix and  Matisse  both showed the view through the arch, while Tanner focused upon the view onto the arch from the painters side. Rixs oil, The Blue Archway (1912), was painted with broad brushstrokes in bold, flat fields of muted colours that can also be seen in other paintings from her first trip to Tangier. At this stage in her career she was still finding her way with oil paint, having developed her technique at the Academie Delecluse and the Academie Colarossi in Paris over a relatively short period of time. Yet she had clearly gained a considerable affinity with and dexterity in the medium, working in a quite experimental way. In The Blue Archway the large figure of a man in a burnoose occupies the foreground; he is facing a woman whose features are obscured by the volume of his body. We see only details of her costume, such as her yellow djellaba, red striped skirt and shoes. As the eye is led into the composition via a path, and deeper into the landscape, a group of figures, which are smaller in size and more distantly located from the viewer, complement the man and woman standing in front of the arch. This group of seated women are bowaabs, or gatekeepers, and are less clearly delineated. We can only make out the dark brown, hand-woven fabric of their simple costume. The thick paint in the foreground creates the impression of the chalky ground of the white city of Tangier, and the solid architectural features of the walls of the kasbah are placed into relief by the arch and bright blue of the sky, which is brought into prominence through Rixs bold composition. Matisse  painted a bolder, flatter and more abstract view of the same scene, this time in deep blue. Probably painted on his second trip to Morocco, the Porte de la casbah (1912-13) forms the right wing of  Matisses Moroccan Triptych. His composition is more restricted than those of the other two artists. He selects a smaller area to focus upon, presenting the view from the front of the arch, looking through it to the other side of the kasbah. The elements of the landscape that come into view in Porte de la casbah are more carefully delineated; for example, the trellis fencing in the garden of a small house, which is revealed through the arch, is seen faintly in Rixs The Blue Archway and is more clearly depicted in  Matisses study.  Matisse  also resorts to flatter blocks of primary colour than Tanner or Rix, who both use more conventional devices to create perspective and a more naturalistic palette. The fauvist use of colour that  Matisse  had earlier pioneered he now developed into new directions, as a more restricted palette entered his practice over this period. This is accompanied by a severe geometric design in the organisation of the composition that was later to influence Picasso. In all three studies of the scene the arch dominates the composition and all feature the bowaabs, the gatekeepers who today are still seen there, noting who comes and goes. While Rixs developing facility in oils is evident in works such as The Blue Archway, and in her small Moroccan Loggia (1912) we see this new ability with paint extended. The splashes of colour created by thick impasto in strategically placed dabs across the canvas give this work a remarkably experimental, almost fauvist aspect. Here her control over the medium is clearly developing, and she uses the fluid quality of the oil to create a flowing account of the architectural images of the loggia in an almost abstract arrangement of form and colour. The works simple structure and relaxed framework allow a wonderful evocation of both architectural elements and light to dominate the picture plane. This new proficiency with paint is also demonstrated in the brightly hued Arab Market Place (1912), a work that captures the light and atmosphere of Tangier.

Tess of the DUrbervilles Chapter 35 Essays

Tess of the DUrbervilles Chapter 35 Essays Tess of the DUrbervilles Chapter 35 Paper Tess of the DUrbervilles Chapter 35 Paper 1. When Tess first tells Angel of her confession, he does not seem to comprehend what she has just said. He gets up and stirs the fire; Clare performed the irrelevant act of stirring the fire; the intelligence had not even yet got to the bottom of him. The confession seems so utterly unbelievable to him that he cannot take it in and seems to be in shock, although he just told Tess a revelation of the same sort about himself. This is the first clue that Angel had an idealised version in his head of Tess. When he first speaks he says O you cannot be out of your mind! You ought to be! Yet you are not This shows that he would have, or would rather have, believed that she was mad other than what she had just told him was true. This also shows his disbelief of how she could have done that. He seems to be severely changed after she tells him; His face had withered. His face has physically changed, described as withered as opposed with the readers previous view that he was handsome. This cou ld also indicate that he is not going to act as he was before as he has changed. This is true as the chapter carries on. Tess tells him she has forgiven him, for what is the same or possibly a worse act than what she has done, and when she asks him if he has forgive her, he says: O Tess, forgiveness does not apply to the case! You were one person; now you are another. My God how can forgiveness meet such a grotesque prestidigitation as that! Although he accepts that she has forgiven him for the same thing, he does not forgive her. He believes that what she has done is a lot worse than what she has done. When he says she is a different person, this shows that he thinks that the person he believed was Tess would not have done this, so he says that she must be a different person. He believed too much in his idealised version of Tess that this revelation is too much of a shock to him. Later he repeats; The woman I have been loving is not you. Here it is clear that he was only in love w ith the Tess in his mind, not for her actual self as she loves him. When she starts crying, he is relieved at it. This implies that because she wasnt crying, instead of her being strong as she was, it makes her seem less innocent and vulnerable, but as she does he is glad that she is showing some sense of emotion at the event. He does not know what to do now, which shows he is still in shock. However, it is obvious that he has changed, as he is sarcastic o her, and also starts denoting her because of her class, again showing how he does not believe she is still the woman he loved. He also begins to class her as her DUrberville roots were; Decrepit families imply decrepit wills, decrepit conduct. He is labelling her into all the things he does not like, although he loved everything about her only a few hours ago. He now sees her as something entirely different and changed. At the end of the chapter when she goes to her room, he almost goes in there to speak to her, but he catches a gl ance at an old portrait of a lady from the DUrberville family. He sees this and immediately compares it to Tess, as if this must be how she is; Sinister design lurked in the womans features, a concentrated purpose of revenge on the other sex. Before he had an idealised image of Tess, and now he has adopted an image of Tess that she is evil.2. In chapter XXV Hardy uses different techniques to describe the change in relationship between Tess and Angel. One of the first things he uses is personification of the surroundings in the room, to help explain how the surroundings reflect the change in Angels attitude towards Tess; But the complexion even of external things seemed to suffer transmutation as her announcement progressed. This is talking about how the atmosphere in the room has changed, but also how this reflects the change that Angel has gone through. What before was a happy room is now portrayed has being changed for the worse. In the chapter previous the fire was described as h aving a red-coaled glow. However now it is described as; The fire in the grate looked impish demonically funny, as if it did not care about her strait. The fender grinned idly, as if it too did not care. Here the fire is described as being somehow evil, like an imp or a demon. This is reflecting how Tess and Angels relationship has changed for the worse, but may also be reflecting how angel now views Tess as evil. This is reiterated later when Tesss eyes are said to make his [Angels] flesh creep, and again at the end of the chapter when Angel compares Tess to one of the ancient DUrberville women Sinister design lurked in the womans features.Another feature that seems to have change is that the structure of the text seems to have changed up to now Hardy has been quite descriptive in his writhing, but in this chapter, especially at the beginning, it seems to be more like a dialogue. For example; Clare performed the irrelevant act of stirring the fire. This does not describe him ge tting up or moving around the room. For most of the chapter, it is just dialogue between Tess and Angel. This shows how the atmosphere seems to have changed and also to reflect the drama of what is going on.Both of the descriptions of Tess and Angel have changed Angels face has become withered, and Tesss lips have become pale. This could reflect how Hardy wants the characters to be viewed Angel as not being as virtuous as the reader had first thought, and Tess is portrayed as more innocent because her lips are no longer red. This is also repeated when her mouth is described as a round little hole. This is significant because one of the things that Angel commented on liking about her was her mouth.Right at the end of the chapter Hardy talks about the light. Before in the book he has talked about the light, especially in the morning when Tess has been looking out over the countryside, which always seemed to imply hope for the future, but now Hardy says; The night came in, and took u p its place there, unconcerned and indifferent. This seems to be implying that this is the end of the happiest period of Tesss life, which started with Angel and is now ending with Angel.3. Previously in the book, Angel was seen as being different from his brothers and other men at the time by being open minded and not conforming to contemporary attitudes. However, his reaction to Tesss confession is contradictory to his earlier behaviour, although it is typical of attitudes of Victorian men at the time. After Angel tells Tess of his admission of being with another woman out of wedlock, Tess is relieved because what she did was the same, or even not as bad, as what he did. However, he goes into shock at the reality that she is not so pure, so sweet, so virginal as what he thought she was. This goes back to how he had an idealised image of what Tess was. In those days, it was much more socially unacceptable for a woman to have sex out of wedlock than it was for a man a woman was seen as being the property of the man. Tess also shows this opinion, as she says to Angel; I dont belong to you any more, then. This shows the point that men were seen as the superior and therefore in charge of the women. Another change in Angels behaviour is his view on class. Before, he wanted to marry Tess, even though she was of a lower social class than he was. He even tried to convince his father that a farming woman would be of better aid to him in the running of a farm. However, he is now judging Tess because of her class, as he says; You almost make me say you are an unapprehending peasant woman. Here Angel is being demeaning towards Tess because of her class, which never mattered to him before. This is reflective of contemporary social attitudes at the time, but this shows how changed Angel is because he is now showing beliefs typical of men in that era, whereas before he prided himself on being more open-minded.

Homemade Iceberg Experiment

Homemade Iceberg Experiment Did you know icebergs consist primarily of fresh water? Icebergs primarily form when parts of glaciers break off or calve icebergs. Since glaciers are made from snow, the resulting icebergs are freshwater. What about ice that forms in the ocean? This sea ice often breaks into ice floes when a solid sheet of ice shifts and thaws in the spring. Although the sea ice comes from seawater, it is fresh water, too. In fact, this is one method of desalination or removing salt from water. You can demonstrate this for yourself. Iceberg Experiment You can make your own homemade seawater and freeze it to make sea ice. Mix up a batch of synthetic seawater. You can approximate seawater by mixing 5 grams of salt in 100 ml of water. Dont worry too much about the concentration. You just need salty water.Put the water in your freezer. Allow it to partially freeze.Remove the ice and rinse it in very cold water (so you dont melt too much of it). Taste the ice.How does the ice cube taste compared with the salty water left in the container? How It Works When you freeze ice out of saltwater or seawater, youre essentially forming a water crystal. The crystal lattice doesnt make much room for salts, so you get ice that is purer than the original water. Similarly, icebergs that form in the ocean (which are really ice floes) arent as salty as the original water. Icebergs that float in the sea dont become contaminated with salt for much the same reason. Either the ice melts into the ocean or else relatively pure water freezes out of the seawater.

How the trp operon works Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

How the trp operon works - Essay Example The operon contains five types of structural genes: Trp A; Trp B; Trp C; Trp D; and Trp E with specific codes and synthesizing properties. The Trp operon regulates its own production through ‘negative feedback loop’ that promotes repressive affect resulting in non transfer of certain genetic expressions or codes (Oxender et. Al., 1979). Another important feature of Trp operon is that it has got attenuators and leader peptides comprising of nearly 140 nucleotides that help to dissociate RNA decoding from the DNA encoding and thereby repress the process of transcription. Thus their property of gene regulation becomes the most critical factor to study the highly complex process of hereditary characteristics and genetic behavioral pattern in living organisms. When it is liberated in the operator, the transcription is made possible and promotes genetic transfer of characteristics. Oxender, D. L., et al. (1979). Conversion Efficiency of Active Energy and Solar Energy Essay -- Solar

Conversion Efficiency of Active Energy and Solar Energy Solar technology already boasts a century of R&D, requires no toxic fuels and relatively little maintenance, is inexhaustible, and, with adequate financial support, is capable of becoming directly competitive with conventional technologies in many locations. These attributes make solar energy one of the most promising sources for many current and future energy needs. As Frank Shuman declared more than 80 years ago, it is "the most rational source of power." The average amount of solar energy arriving on top of the atmosphere is 1,330 watts per square meter. The amount reaching the earth’s surface is 10,000 times more than all commercial energy used annually. Until recently, this energy source has been too diffused and low intensity to capitalize for electricity. Solar energy is a renewable resource and is converted to electrical energy in two ways - using photovoltaic materials which generate an electrical potential when exposed to light or using a thermal process that uses the energy from the sun to heat a working fluid in an electricity generating cycle. Another way of looking at it is as passive and active solar energy. Now you might be wondering what is meant by active and passive, isn’t all transformation of energy active? Passive solar energy relates to systems that are relating to solar radiation and angles to define solar positions which work with heating and cooling systems. To generate the higher temperatures necessary to make steam to generate electricity, the sunlight must be concentrated. Solar thermal technology often uses reflectors, in the form of parabolic concentrators or flat mirrors, to focus the sun's rays onto a water-filled pipe, known as 'abso... ...veloped thin film technology is hydrogenated amorphous silicon. This is the material normally used in consumer applications, although it is used, but less frequently, in power modules. The efficiency of commercial amorphous silicon modules has improved from around 3.5 % in the early 1980's to over 7% currently. The most efficient modules are made with multiple layers of photovoltaic material, for instance three layer amorphous silicon modules with germanium added to two of the layers (a-Si/a-SiGe/a-SiGe) which have a record cell efficiency of 13.5 %. Other types of thin films can be made using polycrystalline silicon, cadmium telluride (CdTe), and copper indium gallium diselenide (CIGS). Today's solar panels are made with silicon. The silicon usually has impurities, which limits its efficiency. Purifying a chemical is too expensive. For that reason, smaller is better.

Scholarly Articles on Leadership

Scholarly Articles 1 by EDD 9100 CRN 35455 Leadership Seminar Nova Southeastern University February 4, 2012 Scholarly Articles 1 According to the authors of this article (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009), principals need to concentrate on the development of skills and behaviors in order to be successful in motivating, leading, and changing the direction of a school. The successful principal understands that there exists a fine balance of caring for others and the need to accomplish specific tasks (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).The following areas are targeted in this article: the need to become an effective consultant, the need to become a mediator and consensus builder, the need to become an individual that values relationships and to step back and reconnect on a regular basis to their core beliefs and values (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). Interwoven through all areas is the need to realize that it takes time to develop the skills needed, experience being the best teacher of what works (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).The underlying theme throughout the article is one of a need for open communication combined with a balanced and caring attitude towards staff. On the topic of becoming an effective consultant within their school it is pointed out that principals need to be less directive and more collaborative in their push towards improvement and the use of best practice in the classroom (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). It is of rimary importance that they possess the ability to listen to the stakeholders and assist in the translation of concerns into practice (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). In order to be able to effectively fill the role of consultant within their school principals need to possess a reasonable level of understanding of educational pedagogy and curriculum; and possess a skill set combining the ability to problem solve, actively listen, and su pport (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).In terms of becoming a mediator and consensus builder the authors detailed the need for principals to possess relational leadership skills in order to be able to both facilitate groups and coach others on staff in the ability to facilitate their own groups, and stressed that the key to this is the ability to effectively participate in conflict resolution (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).The authors suggested that conflict is part and parcel of school reform and that in addition to being able to deal effectively with conflict the successful principal needs to develop the ability for bringing about consensus within the group, noting that interpersonal and intrapersonal skills were as much or more important than knowledge (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).In the area of relationships it was noted that principals that are most effective are those that place high value on people and relationships and th at when this exists as a core part of the belief system of the principal it is noticeable and is communicated to staff in both subtle and explicit ways (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). According to the authors this sense of value comes through in all of the dealings that the principal has with stakeholders (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).It shows in body language, expression, communication, tone and innumerable other subtle signals that help to set the tone of the school’s culture (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). Key to this being successfully implemented is for the principal to consciously think through a personal rationale that balances responsibilities and relationships (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). Principals need to occasionally stepping back to reconnect to their core values in order to maintain the balance needed to effectively lead (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).It was noted that in all areas of the development process is the need to understand that these skills and beliefs come about over time. The truly effective principal is able uses past experiences to help hone and define these skills and beliefs to bring about change, growth and effective overall leadership (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). The effective principal never stops learning from these day to day and year to year experiences and continues to hone and refine based upon them (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009).In the writer’s opinion it would greatly assist in the growth, development, morale and overall job satisfaction for the organization if the current leadership of which the writer is a member, were to possess the skills and beliefs noted in the article. This would most likely require training, coaching or the reassignment or hiring of new personnel for leadership positions in order to develop the capacity to exhibit a balance between the valuing of indi viduals and relationships, the need to and responsibilities of the position, and the skill set of effective collaboration, mediation, and consensus building.A leadership team that operates following these principals fosters a sense of openness, consistency and fairness among stakeholders (Donaldson, Marnik, Mackenzie, & Ackerman, 2009). When this exists, staff feels secure. When staff feels secure it becomes more willing to step out and suggest or embrace change for the growth, development, and betterment of the organization. References Donaldson,G. , Marnik, G. , Mackenzie, S. , & Ackerman, R. (2009). What makes or breaks a principal. Educational Leadership, 67 (2), 8-14.

Strategic Review - 1527 Words

As the new VP of Marketing at Clipboard Tablet Co., it is my duty to both analyze the results of the previous VP, and offer my own analysis on product performance for the X5, X6, and X7 tablets. Specifically, I will focus on the products themselves, their life cycles, and how they stack up in terms of price and performance. A financial review of each product will be undertaken as well, focusing on sales, costs, profitability, prices, and unit margins. I will then conduct a market review which will cover subjects ranging from new sales, previous sales, and market saturation. Initial observations indicate the previous VP of Marketing,†¦show more content†¦Just as with other products like Apple or even Lamborghini, in the eyes of the consumer expensive means exclusive and therefore ‘cool.’ Yet another way we can cut costs for the X6, and this was already alluded to, is to reduce RD significantly. I propose it be moved down to 15%. This will account for some software and potential hardware upgrades that will be anticipated since the product has only been at market for two years. The X7 deserves the most attention however. First, such a new product deserves much more RD allocated to it. Therefore, I propose the remaining 75% of our RD budget be focused on the construction of the X7 to its fullest degree. Market research indicates customers care about both price and performance with this model, and we therefore must focus our efforts to that cause. Especially considering financial and marketing info shows the X7 has gotten off to such a slow start. Initial sales are somewhat healthy for a new product, 165,586; but total costs have yet to be turned into real profit (down -73%). And though we will see costs rise with more RD resources dedicated to getting the X7 off the ground and competitive, I believe these will be sunk costs as profits will reflect the quality nature of the product.
